Author's Response: You mean to catch Tom? I'm not sure if he would have caught up with him in time, and if he did, Tom probably would have shrugged him off. When I was writing it I thought of it like this: Bill is so caught off guard by Tom's behavior, that he kind of just stands there and ruminates, watching him go, rather than chase him.
