If I didn't have faith in Bill, I'd say the metaphor is that both an elevator and Bill welcome pretty much anyone in, and are often visited? Meh :) I'm glad for this chapter, can't wait to know what happened with Lindie. Now that Bill figures there's something special in Tom, I just wish he'd realize it wasn't that Tom would be useable, but ~love~. Because it's going to kill Tom if Bill lets him close and ends up using him despite their closeness. Oh well, that's probably exactly what Bill will do, break them both, but I hope they'll be there to put each other back together again.
