Oh, this was really good! I liked your characterisations; I could imagine Bill reacting like that, and I like how worried Tom was. You could understand why each of them was acting the way they did.
One little thing, when you wrote: “Tired?” Tom was trying to do some small-talk. It sounded a little awkward, and you changed tenses. If you worded it: “Tired?” Tom tried making small talk. I think it would flow better.
