So the thing is, when I read its usually to get away from it all for a while - just a tension-free space where I don't have to think much about anything. Well, I'm sorry to say this fic made me think.
Even sorrier that you made me like it.
It's not that the idea is superbly original and something that's never been done before - the mutant thing has been done quite often, rather - but what makes it different is the way you write it. You write like we live, if that makes sense. You don't give us all the information at one time - hell, you don't give us all the information at all sometimes; you drop crumbs of it behind so that its left up to us to pick them up and try to piece the puzzle and that requires thinking so normally I would hate it but this... agh, you made it FUN!
There. I said it. Don't let it get to your head. D: But you made it fun, enjoyable, maybe more so than the simple stories I usually read, so imagine my surprise when I would stop in the middle of reading a chapter, squeal a little and go, "Oh, I get that now!"
...not what I wanted to be doing, I assure you. But the point of my little rant was that you have a talent. More than just being good at writing, more than just having a good grasp of the language, more than all of that... you have a talent for getting your readers involved in the story. I don't know if you do it intentionally or the story just comes out of you like that but when I read this fic I think of those long, complicated novels I had to read in AP Lit, the ones that I marked up with notes like "foreshadowing" and "will this come up later?"
It reminded me of when I first watched the Sixth Sense, too (which if you haven't watched, you should) and once the movie was finished I was left going whoa that was good, but that wasn't the best part, no... the best part was when I watched it a second time and noticed all the clues and how complicated it was and how much thought the creator had put into it. I find myself doing the same thing with this fic, and to be able to get your readers to do that? That's a real gift.
And coming from the fic itself, you know gifts shouldn't be wasted. ;) Keep writing, hon. I'll definitely keep reading.
