if i rememeber correctly, in ancient China.. in small villages of some part of it, when the harvest was not sufficient, the village would decide to let some people to the wild, they were called the People of the Fallen Leaves. Generally it would be from 1 to 3 persons a year if the year is bad... and they were supposed to get killed by the animals, die being hungry, or they would survive.. and actully they would gather in groups, those who were sent to the wild in different years and would lead a very descreet way of life, eating scarsely, just berries or soemthing, and being VERY quiet, that is they could move around the forest with no sound at all, as the shadows...that feature developed because if the people from the village found them they would be killed...
seen that on discovery channel long time ago...

The part in the forest was sweet, though the chapter was short I liked it a lot :)
