Oh no, how rude these guys are. They didn't pay you a visit when they went to see the Carnival of Flowers! Aren't they horrible? Haha Btw, that event must be really worth attendingt :) And the stuffed giant owl, awwww.
Living with Tom must be tough on Bill. He's attracted by him and he's somehow rejected. I'm happy this doesn't destroy his newly-found self confidence.
But Tom had already made it clear more than once he will never have sex with him, whatever the reason may be and regardless his possible attraction to Bill, so insisting is not a smart move nor a kind one.
Bill has everything beyond anybody's wildest dreams, but he wants even more, which is a bit bratty if you ask me. I understand he's a teenager and he's in love not with the supernatural creature but with the “real” Tom, but not having sex with him is the one and only single rule Bill is asked to comply with. After all, he accepted to live the life of a different kind of creatures, which this may involve behaviors different than humans'.
I believe that if Tom explains to Bill the reason why he can't be intimate with him, the kid would suffer less.
Author's Response: I've always said that if I was a vampire, I'd be out there killing child molesters because they get away with it so often and remain unpunished, free to ruin children's lives over and over. I mean, if you gotta kill people to live, why not kill the truly deserving? I'll say, it was a bit rude of Tom and Bill not to drop in while they were in town, haha :D if you ever come to visit me, come mid-September so you can see the Carnival of Flowers that I have described in this chapter. It's a great time of the year where our town comes alive! You're right, though - Bill isn't respecting Tom's decision to keep their relationship on a parent/child level, but on the other hand Bill is confused when he sees that Tom is attracted to him and can't understand why they shouldn't just be together. Having Tom look at you with hunger and then pushing you away when you react would be enough to bewilder a grown adult, let alone a seventeen year old boy who has no idea what's going on. Yes, Tom should definitely tell Bill the reason why, because keeping secrets and withholding truths can destroy any relationship, no matter how close and caring. As the story progresses, I find it more and more moving, and I don't know why. It's intense, bittersweet, and the loneliness Bill has experienced is everywhere: in his thoughts, in the comparison between his former and new life, in the desperate need not to lose Tom.
Then, there's Tom's tenderness toward him. It's better than any kind of love anybody could experience in life. As I read, I can “see” Tom's beautiful place, Bill's beauty fully restored, his gratefulness and deep connection to this wonderful man who calls him “my child”.
Oh my, just the way Tom talks to Bill and cradles him in his arms would be enough for me to feel melancholic and happy at the same time!
In my previous comment, I forgot to say that I'm somehow afraid of the Asian guy Bill has met twice, but I won't say why because, it what I think it's true, I don't want to spoil the fun.
Author's Response: It's true, Bill has been very lonely and since Tom entered his life, Bill has realised how much he's missed out on having somebody truly care for him. He needs Tom, perhaps a little too much, and Tom needs him (as he's spent decades alone, with nobody to give affection to) but that kind of deep need can result in problems, as you are finding out! I was sure I reviewed this chapter, and I was wrong (the result of too much worries, I guess).
Let's talk about Bill. He's getting more and more accustomed to the supernatural, but this doesn't make him a fairy-tale character. What he does, thinks, and wonders is what you can find in a real teenager's journal. We could say it's weird that a teenager believes in vampire or angels and asks himself tons of questions about such fictional beings, but it's not true.
Everybody needs to believe in something, and many things people believe into are way stranger than vampires, in my opinion. I'm thinking about sects, cults, miraculous concoctions that change your life for the better or bewitch the one you love, clarvoyants and all sort of charlatans.
So, why not vampires? Especially when you've already met someone who has done only good to you, from saving your life to making yourself more self confident.
I love that Bill try to find out all he can about Tom's species and, when he wonders if they can breed, I was about to cry: “Oh yes, they can!”, because I've read “Lost Souls” three times in a row lol And I laughed like crazy about questions Bill asks himself about Tom sleeping buried somewhere or in a coffin!
Another thing I love, is that you describe a vampire as you imagine him. None of us has ever met one (no, we're not that lucky haha) so welcome any way our imagination depicts them.
Then my eyes nearly popped out of my head when you mentioned blood banks. One thing you couldn't possibly know – because I never told you – is that ages ago, I wrote a ff where Bill was a vampire who hated to kill people. He couldn't believe his luck when he met Tom, a medical technician working in a blood bank, who provided him all the “food” he wanted.
We're true soul mates, honey :)
Author's Response: It's perfectly okay and I understand if you haven't been able to read the new chapters, let alone review them. Take your time, my dear - they aren't going anywhere! Haha, you're so right about what goes on in a teenager's mind! When I was a teen, my mind was filled with vampires and all the silly & strange questions that Bill has. And yes, part of the fun of writing about these creatures is being able to take bits and pieces from all the TV shows/movies/books you like and create your own version of them. My vampires are a mix of The Lost Boys, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Buffy & Angel vampires, True Blood vamps and Blade bloodsuckers. But no breeding for my vampires because having a baby is gory enough in real life, let alone birthing a kid that kills you on the way out LOL Oh wow, I had no idea about the blood bank fic you wrote o.O There have been SO many coincidences between you and I. It all seemed like a perfect life. Travel, culture, education ... But nothing is perfect. Bill lacks the specific kind of love that Tom doesn't want to give him. Although I don't understand why.
But I'm glad that Sid is dead for the common good. Will Bill meet his mother again? Maybe it's bad, but I want her to suffer for the way she betrayed her child for her own comfort.
