Author's Response: Eventually the US will get there. Will take them another 10 years probably :/ At these moments I'm so happy I'm from the country that introduced equal marriage rights first. Though we still have a long way to go on some issues.

Author's Response: Civil unions are, not marriage. Which have a different legal status than marriages, with less extensive rights.
You still can't adopt a child as a same sex couple, one parent has to adopt as a single parent first and then the second can adopt his/her partner's child. There have been improvements (like the 'second-hand' adoption) but that's not due to Merkel, that's due to the constitutional court rulings.
Merkel recently stated that she is not in favour of updating the unions to a marriage and letting same sex couples adopt as a couple because she's concerned with the child's well-being.... I know it's the opinion of her voters although she herself is probably in favour. But it's disgusting she still represents that. (Nah, I'm not angry about this at all... >.<)
