Author's Response: Danke. I added this part to really emphasize why Alena is how she is and makes the choices she makes as well as why she's with her aunt and uncle. I actually have parents that just weren't really there emotionally and didn't really care; my sister was the one teaching me to tie my shoes and ride bikes. My dad taught me to make pancakes and spaghetti when I was six and told me "okay you know breakfast and dinner, you can fully take care of yourself now." so I really did take care of myself mostly, I didn't have people to depend on and teach me to be social and caring. So I really took from that to create Alena's more troubled background. This part, the part written on the banner where she's beat, and a part coming up later where Bill is in trouble because of her are actually my favorite parts because of the emotion in them.
