You have a wonderful ability to create atmosphere with apparent ease and I know for a fact it is not so. Your choice of words reveal you do in fact know what you're trying to say; as opposed to reaching for a word that makes you sound smart.

The POV from Tom was aptly confused and hesitant while remaining resigned to his choices and his fate. With minimal words you managed to convey that he's had to deal with these feelings for years and now it's reduced to an old wound that is reopened every time he's caught off guard by Bill.
