Good start. My only hesitation is that someone like Bill would NEVER ask someone like Tom how he could afford his vehicle - especially so early in their acquaintance. It would be a huge diss.
Author's Response: Think like this: Bill's smart and he knows that people who work for the county (which includes lab rats) don't get paid as much as people who work for a private company. Tom's car is expensive, and Bill knows that as well, so he simply wonders how Tom can afford it if his salary is as low as Bill thinks it is.
