Have I told you how amazing you are at writing this? this has to be your best story yet, it's just so gorgeous. This is like reading a book. A novel about all the things that most authors won't write about: single parent being a dad, about how children deal with having a gay parent, and of course all the other things, about falling in love, about people not being able to accept that love, about a mom finding out that her son is gay...all these things and you twine them together so well, making everything just as important and just as valued in the fic.
not a cliff hanger this time, but definitely something that makes us readers wonder: will it really be this easy? well, with heather's mom it wasn't, and I wonder how the other kids will react, but with Janni...I can't imagine her ever being a reason for Tom not to be with Bill. You know what would be really great? if you wrote a one shot about her in her late teens, thinking back to these days and telling a little bit about her point of view, how it was growing up with a gay father.

"It made Bill want to treat him so right, so tenderly; to spoil him." I can just imagine all the shades of red Tom's face would turn into if Bill told him this xD
trying not to copy and paste your entire story here, but you make it really hard, there are so many memorable lines here. this one: "Bill’s breath caught at Tom’s touch and he could have had a steel grip on Bill’s neck, for all Bill could have resisted him then." is just beautiful!
the kiss was smokin', and yes, I am going to say it:

I really love how you had Tom explain things to Janni. It was done in a very sensitive and thoughtful way...which is a hard thing to do since she's only 5! I'm really loving the progression of this story, it's just dragging me right in!

:DDD I smiled so big that Tom let slip the l-word. And that Bill is referring to him as his 'boyfriend'. They're so sweet together and I just know they'll get through the troubles that look like they're brewing ahead.
And Tom was so good at explaining things to Janni--you really got across how children find the concept that any two people can love each other easier to accept than a lot of adults because they aren't already tainted with prejudices. Anyway, it was a sweet daddy/daughter scene between the two of them. Now I'm curious to see what happens next. I vote for more kissing. ;)

God so much trouble for being gay! Heather's mom really made me angry. I just don't get her or people like her. If Tom's dating a man doesn't affect her life at all. What I also love about this story is how it's so logical and well thought out. You have adults acting like adults, parents like parents and kids like kids. And, of course, lovers like lovers. Parents always worry about how their kids are going to react to situations, and Tom did the logical thing by cutting the picnic short so he could reassure his daughter that what she saw was okay, normal.
