Tokio Hotel Fiction Challenges

About

The Official THF Challenges are just what the title implies; Fanfic challenges for tokiohotelfiction.com. ;) We'd love it if you participated! Periodically, we may even offer prizes!

Submissions will be sent to thfiction@gmail.com by the listed deadline under the challenge, and the admin staff will post the fanfics anonymously to the website. All of the submitted fanfics will go into a series named for the challenge. Each fanfic will be labeled so members will know it's for the challenge.

After the last fics are posted, the fanfics will no longer be anonymous. The authors name will be added to the story, and it will show up in the author's account. However, the story must stay in the challenge series.

Rules
  1. You must stay within the guidelines of the challenge, but feel free to put your own spin on it.

  2. Fanfic submissions must be sent to thfiction@gmail.com by the deadline listed under the challenge. You will, on average, have about a month and a half to write and submit your challenge response. Do not submit your entry to the website under your pen name. You will be disqualified.

  3. All submissions must have the following in the subject line of your email: [Name of Challenge]: [Title of Fanfic] by [author]

  4. When submitting your story, you may copy/paste the text into the body of the email, or attach a document to the email.

  5. All stories must have the following header in the body of the email.

      Title:
Author: (Only the admin will know who wrote what. The readers/voters will not.)
      Rating:
      Characters:
      Category: (Het, Slash, Gen)
Genre: (Pick from the THF genre list)
Warning: (Pick from the THF warning list)
Main Pairing: (Must be listed in the THF Pairing list)
      Side Pairing: (Ditto)
      Summary:
      Author's Notes:

  6. Each submission must be at least the minimum length described in the challenge.

  7. Coauthors are allowed, but if there are prizes and you win, you and your writing partner will have to divvy up the prize amongst yourselves. We won't do it for you.

  8. You may only submit one story per challenge, unless otherwise specified.

  9. You must keep your identity anonymous. You may not rally your friends to vote for you if there are prizes. Please do not give hints on twitter or facebook as to which story is yours!

  10. If you want to have your story beta read, which you should, it's fine to tell your beta reader who you are. However, your beta reader MUST keep your identity a secret.

  11. If we receive any plagiarized material, you will be banned from the website permanently.

Lastly

That's it! Remember to have fun! :)

Summary: Challenge #1: Flip Flop Challenge (April/May 2009)

This challenge is all about broadening your horizons. Most authors have a specific category they normally write. The categories are Gen, Het, and Slash. In this challenge, you will write a category that you have never written before. Be creative! If you normally write slash, write het or gen! If you normally write het, write slash or gen! If you're a gen writer, branch our and write slash or het. ;)

If you're the type who has written all three categories, then we want you to pick the category you've written the least in, and choose a genre/pairing that you have never written before.

We think it'd be really fun to see what everyone can come up with. You're limited to one chapter, so it won't even be that painful. ;) You might even surprise yourself and find something new that you enjoy.

We have a special Tokio Hotel Prize Pack for the grand prize winner of this challenge. The prize pack will include a couple of posters of the band, and a few other things, too. :) And of course, the winning fic will be featured for a full week.

For this first challenge, there will be not only a grand prize winner, but a second and third place winner.

The second place winner will receive a $10.00 iTunes gift card. The third place winner will receive a $5.00 iTunes gift card.

We encourage everyone to join in. This is supposed to be fun, so let's kick off the challenges with some positive energy and have a bunch of submissions! :)

Good luck and have fun!

Challenge #2: Famous Last Words Challenge(April/May 2009)

Our second official challenge is called The Famous Last Words Challenge! In the Famous Last Words Challenge, we are going to give you all one sentence, and that sentence will be, without any exception, the very last line of your story.

There aren't any restrictions this time around. Your story can be any category, any pairing, any genre, anything at all. The only thing we ask of you in this challenge is that you end your story with the line we supply you with (and that it makes sense!).

And now, the sentence you will be ending your Challenge stories with is...

He turned to his band mates, a weary smile on his face, and said, "Well, it could be worse - at least we still have our dignity... and our pants."

No matter what, your story must end with this line! Work it however you want it, but at the end, it all has to come together with this one sentence. Tricky, huh? Maybe! Get creative, be silly, be spontaneous. Go over the top, step out of your comfort zone.

Now, there are a couple more guidelines. We ask that you have your story beta read and ready to post, and we ask that your story is no shorter than 1000 words, and no longer than 7000. This puts everyone in the same general playing field.

Challenge #3: Say It With a Card! (April 16th-May 16th 2010)

In the Say it With a Card challenge you have to go to the http://www.someecards.com/ website and choose a card that speaks to you, or makes you spit your juice on the monitor or anything that makes you go, "Wow, that's a card right there!" Let it inspire you or use the words as a piece of dialogue, or even have someone give someone else the card, whatever you want! Be creative! Again, we'll ask that the submission be betaed and the minimum word count submitted for each entry is one thousand words, the maximum seven thousand.

You must also provide a link at the bottom of your entry to the card or cards that inspired you or were used in the story!

Summary:

Most fandoms with large fan fiction communities have had at least one remix in their history. So where's OUR remix? Here it is, guys. Now it's the Tokio Hotel fandom's turn.

What is a Fandom Remix?

How many times have you read a story that you've absolutely loved, and wondered what it would have been like from a different POV, or what happened in scenes that the author didn't include? Were there conversations between characters that you never got to see? What were other characters thinking in the story?

A fandom remix is your chance to find all of these things out and for others to reinterpret your own work!

Authors who want to be involved in the challenge sign up to have their stories remixed, and in turn they get to remix someone else's story.

Remixing a fanfic is a lot like remixing a song - you can change a fic to fit a different style or view. It's basically a reinterpretation of a story.

How does it work?

Authors who are interested sign up, and list three of their stories that they would like to be considered for the remix. The authors are shuffled and randomly assigned another author (who has signed up for the remix, too). The author can then choose which of the three stories that their assigned author has listed to remix. Authors must have written at least three stories that are posted on THF to sign up for this challenge. This does not include poetry, drabbles, works in progress, or co-authored stories.

If you want to participate in this challenge you need to be completely okay with having someone else reinterpret one of your own fics. You can decide three fics you feel comfortable with someone remixing and another author will pick one of them to remix.

Does this mean we just get to
totally rewrite someone's story how WE WANT?!

Sort of. You can pretty much do whatever you like with the story like changing the POV, dialogue, mood, characterization, making it longer or shorter, whatever. The only things you can't change are pairing(s), setting(s), and the basic plotline.

CHALLENGE 4 WINNERS!

Challenge #6: Your Own Spin (April 6th-June 1st, 2014)

Have you ever noticed that so many stories are written around common themes, yet they are all very different stories? That's the point of this new challenge. We give you five different prompts, you choose one and write a story, throwing your own spin on the prompt. Someone else may choose the same prompt, but their story could go an entirely different direction, with different characters!

So that's it! Pick a prompt, write a story. We're asking for a minimum of 2000 words, as we'd like to see these prompts fully realized in fiction. There's no word limit, however! If you want to write a 10 chapter story, that's perfectly fine, so long as the story is done, beta read and turned in by the deadline. If you email your story to us and want to write another, you're sure welcome to do that!

Speaking of deadline! June 1st is the final day to turn in your stories. Again, they must be finished, beta read, edited and emailed to us at thfiction@gmail.com by that date. We will then organize the stories for submission and begin posting by June 6th.

Lastly, please refer to THF Challenges for formatting rules and general submission requirements. Stories submitted without the header will be returned to the author for editing. Please include the prompt number in your heading.

And here we go! These are the prompts submitted by THF members and voted on by THF staff. Pick one and have fun!

1. The whole band goes out for a night of drinking to celebrate their new album, and the next morning nobody remembers a thing. But [character A] is going to have a lot of explaining to do when certain photos from that night end up in a tabloid magazine.

2. Character A is off to Uni/College and desperately tries finding a roommate so he does not have to go live in the dorms. Character B says yes on a whim. The two move in together but quickly discover they have really different thoughts of what living together includes, what tidy and orderly is and very different concepts of appropriate personal space. Either character may be the neat freak but that does not mean the same character also needs big personal space. Whatever works best with your idea.

3. On the death of a wealthy, great-great uncle on his father's side of the family, Character A inherits a great fortune. Half of the fortune is caught up in a very large Estate which has been abandoned for unknown reasons (though common rumour is that it is haunted). Before selling the Estate, Georg, Tom, Gustav and Bill decide to stay there for a weekend as a 'ghost hunting' experience' - but none of them are prepared for what happens to all of them, both within the house and with each other.

4. (Character A) is a business tycoon, stiff, strict and solemn. On a trip to (destination) he/she catches the eye of an easy going (character B). Something stirs inside them both and turns out (character A) hadn't forgotten how to have a bit of fun.

5. Everyone is in LA, the whole band back together again and staying at the twins' new house. After a night of celebrating the completion of the album person A accidentally stumbles into person B's room, thinking it's their own. When person B realizes someone just got into the bed with them...

Challenge #7: Feel It All
July 19th - September 13th

First place (tie): Head over Heels by em_rose483
First place (tie): The Lucky Ones by Ghostie
Third place: Movie Night by Zarlina

For this challenge, we want you to write a story based around 4 randomly paired phrases. Half of them will be taken from Kings of Suburbia lyrics, and half will be normal everyday items or ideas. For example, you might get a set like this:

hurts like love/into the daylight/blue lake/long wait

From there, it is up to you to make these phrases into a story! To submit, you must read the THF Challenge Rules. They will tell you how to do everything! Make sure to include the phrases you used in your author notes! You may submit multiple times to this challenge if you wish. Submissions must comply with THF site rules (500 word min, no max). Sets of phrases will be assigned randomly. If you absolutely cannot write anything with your set, let us know and we can find another for you.

If you would like to participate, please email thfiction@gmail.com with the title "Feel It All Challenge" and we will give you your set of phrases! You may request a set all the way up until the deadline, which will be September 13th.

Some guidelines:
1. You have to include at least three of the phrases in your story. All four would be great but if one is really troubling you, you may drop it.
2. The phrases do not all have to be key to the story, they just have to be in there.
3. You may adjust a phrase for grammatical purposes, ie, changing "hurts like love" to "hurt like love", and/or to add a word, ie "hurts bitterly like love". If you want to tweak a phrase but aren't sure it would be allowed, just ask!
4. Have fun!!!

Again, please email thfiction@gmail.com with the title "Feel It All Challenge" to receive your phrases. The deadline is September 13th. Best of luck, we can't wait to read your submissions!
