Banner Guide
So you’ve finally got a banner for your fic and it’s beautiful! You either slaved for hours to make it yourself or requested it from one of the lovely artists over at the [now defunct] Banner Shop. Now you’re excited to upload it to your fic, but you’ve run into a slight problem: How exactly do you do that?!

First things first, locate your banner. If a banner artist made one for you, there’s a good chance they either e-mailed you the URL link or a copy attachment for you to download.

If they e-mailed you a URL link:

      1. Click the link so your banner is showing on the screen.
      2. If you haven’t already done so, save the banner to your computer. The most sensible place to save it would be somewhere in your My Pictures folder.
Tip: To save the banner, all you need to do is right-click on it, select the Save Image As…option from the pop-up menu, and choose the folder you wish to save it in.

If they sent you a copy attachment:

      1. Locate where the attachments are kept in your e-mail’s setup. All e-mail domains are different, but the attachments are almost always visible somewhere within the body of the e-mail.
      2. You may need to right-click on the paperclip graphic in order to save it. Others may just need to click on a link that says Download.
      3. Save it to your computer. The most sensible place would be somewhere in your My Pictures folder.

Next, you’ve got to find a site that will host your banner. We call these image hosting service sites and there are dozens to choose from. A few of the more popular choices are:

Some of the above sites require that you register an account before uploading any images. While this can slow the process of uploading the banner to your fic, it is a useful tool to have on-hand shall you need it. It is recommended that you take the time to register an account if you’d like to be able to edit and delete the images you upload, including your story banner. If you don’t wish to do all of that, choose from one of the other sites that don’t require you to create an account.

Whether you’ve created an account or not, the process is still the same to uploading an image.

Uploading your banner to an image hosting service site:

      1. Click the Browse… button and locate where you saved your banner.
      2. Double-click the banner or click Open.
      3. Click Upload and wait for your browser to refresh.

Hurray, you’re so close being finished! Now comes the easy part.

Placing the banner on your fic:

      1. Open your fic in a new window/tab and click the [Edit] button next to your options.
      2. Go to the window/tab that has your banner uploaded on the image hosting service site.
      3. See all the different links you have to choose from? You need to highlight and copy the code labeled HTML.
Tip: To copy something, you can right-click and select Copy or use Ctrl + C on your keyboard.

      4. Go back to the window/tab that has your story.
      5. Select the place in the Summary box where you’d like your banner. For example, do you want the banner before or after your text summary?
      6. Paste the code in the box by either right-clicking and selecting Paste or using Ctrl + V on your keyboard.
      7. Click Add Story to save your changes and viola! Your banner is now uploaded onto your story. :)

    Extra: Centering your banner:

      1. Open your fic in a new window/tab and click the [Edit] button next to your options.
      2. Locate the Summary box and determine where the code for your banner begins. It should start with something like this:
      3. Click the beginning of the code and type in <*center*>, minus the asterisks.
      4. Now go to the end of the code and type in <*/center*>; again, minus the asterisks.
      5. Click Add Story to save your changes and viola! Your banner is now centered on your story. :)
