As a transsexual myself, I gotta say that it doesn't seem like you did much research on transitioning since surgery is typically the last part of transition...seems silly to be talking about that so early on...but I also haven't finished reading yet lol.
I really like your characterization of Bill. I connect a lot with what she says and feel a lot of what she feels. But if Tom were so supportive, he wouldn't keep saying "little brother" and using male pronouns...he'd be addressing Bill as the woman she is. I hope he comes around in time, because after a while, that can really hurt. No matter what your genitals are, you should get the respect you deserve...with pronouns that reflect your gender rather than your sex.
Overall I'm liking the story so far. My family had a similar reaction to Gordon's when I came out...I wish my family was as supportive as Simone! What a marvelous lady.
