Author's Response: I'm not 100% sure if I understand your question, so correct me if I don't answer it completely. Tom's parents are just trying to gain his trust by bribing him and such. They don't want him not to trust them, because then that would be very bad on their part. I can't give exact reasons as not to ruin the plot, but they definitely don't have good reasons for this.
